Origin and development
How language developed
Russian is an East Slavic language. Its writing tradition was strongly influenced by Church Slavonic; Under Peter the Great, a simplified civil written form emerged at the beginning of the 18th century.
The spelling reform after 1917 shaped today's orthography. Through the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, Russian spread far beyond what is now the Russian Federation.
