Origin and development

How the language developed

Ukrainian developed within the East Slavic language area and has historical links to Ruthenian writing traditions. The modern literary language took shape particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The language uses its own Cyrillic alphabet, with letters such as ґ, є, і and ї. Political restrictions and shifting borders have had a major influence on its linguistic and documentary history.
