Origin and development
How language developed
Azerbaijani belongs to the Oghuz branch of Turkic languages and is closely related to Turkish. Today's standard language developed from regional Oghuz language forms in the Caucasus and northern Iran.
The history of writing is particularly relevant for documents: in addition to Arabic script, Latin and Cyrillic alphabets were used in the 20th century. The Republic of Azerbaijan today uses a Latin alphabet, but older documents may look significantly different.
