Origin and development

How language developed

Turkish belongs to the Oghuz branch of Turkic languages. The Ottoman written language used Arabic script and a vocabulary heavily influenced by Persian and Arabic.

In 1928 a Latin alphabet was introduced in the Republic of Türkiye. The language reforms of the 20th century significantly changed vocabulary and writing, which is why older documents require special knowledge.
