Origin and development

How the language developed

Turkish belongs to the Oghuz branch of the Turkic languages. Written Ottoman Turkish used Arabic script and a vocabulary heavily influenced by Persian and Arabic.

A Latin alphabet was introduced in the Republic of Türkiye in 1928. The language reforms of the 20th century significantly changed its vocabulary and written appearance, so older documents require specialist knowledge.
