Origin and development
How the language developed
Spanish is a Romance language that developed from spoken Latin on the Iberian Peninsula. Castilian became the basis of the supraregional standard language and incorporated Arabic loanwords, among others.
Colonial history and migration gave rise to distinct national varieties in the Americas. They share a written language but differ in vocabulary, pronunciation and terminology used by public authorities.
